On the north eastern edge of Tanzania lies an area of natural beauty that draws thousands of tourists looking for a once in a lifetime challenge. The Kilimanjaro region incorporates the Kilimanjaro National Park, a World Heritage Site and protected game reserve, where visitors can get close to various wildlife, including cape buffalo, blue monkeys, elephants and leopards. Although there are many reasons to visit this incredible region, many tourists come here for one single reason: to make the seven day trek up the world’s highest volcano. Mount Kilimanjaro stands proud above the surrounding forest, wreathed in cloud and can be tackled via several different routes that ascend to the summit. At a height of 19,340 ft, it is not a challenge to be taken lightly, but if well prepared and accompanied by a professional licensed tour guide, it is a truly remarkable experience. If you don’t want to spend a week on the mountain, there are plenty of other activities that are worth the journey. On the mountain’s lower slopes sits the region’s capital Moshi, a place where most people begin their exploration of the area. You can book with a local tour company to go on safari by horse, camel or mountain bike and see some of the local wildlife in their natural habitat. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to spend time in a village inhabited by African indigenous people, like the Maasi tribe, to learn about their customs, handicrafts and way of life. You can even spend a night in a typical tribal house built using the traditional woven technique. The Kilimanjaro region offers experiences that are impossible to forget, whether you choose to take the mountain challenge or prefer to keep you feet firmly on the valley floor, this is a truly remarkable and memorable place.
You can visit the Kilimanjaro region all year round due to the moderate climate. However, the region has two distinct dry and wet seasons, so if you want to climb the mountain it is advisable to visit in the dryer months of January, February and September.
Most visitors prefer to do the climb in pleasant, warm weather, but if you want to get a cheaper deal on travel costs, accommodations and tour prices, you can still attempt the journey in the rainy season, which runs from the end of March to June.
Moshi is best explored on foot due to its small size, as it only takes 15 minutes to walk from one side of town to the other. Taxis are also available within the town.
